Coatings are a weather-dependent product
A marine coating system is specified with an application window: surface temperature above the dew point by a required margin, relative humidity below a stated ceiling, and a curing period within a temperature band. Miss the window and the paint still looks correct on delivery — the consequences arrive two or three years later as premature breakdown, and then as steel work at the next special survey.
This is why the climate of the yard, in the season the vessel is actually docked, belongs in the yard selection discussion rather than being treated as a detail.
The northern China difference
DSIC-Shanhaiguan sits in northern China, in a continental, dry climate — materially different from the monsoon-influenced conditions of the Shanghai region. For coating work, that drier air is a direct advantage: fewer lost application days, more of the work inside specification, and paint quality that owners notice.
Quality-focused Greek owners already know this yard well. Among Turkish owners it remains largely undiscovered, which is the gap our contact office is there to close.
What the yard is actually equipped for
Shanhaiguan is one of the largest yards in northern China, built primarily around the offshore market while serving the full commercial fleet for repair and conversion:
- A facility of over 2 million m² with 5.5 km of quay length
- Six drydocks, including a 440 × 100 m newbuilding dock
- Steel processing capacity of roughly 1,000 tonnes per day
- Pipe fabrication capacity of around 8,000 tonnes per year
That capacity set matters for the project types it takes on: tanker-to-FSO conversions, large livestock carrier conversions, Suezmax conversions to offshore transport vessels, and VLCC to handy-size newbuildings — the high-budget, high-engineering end of the market — alongside standard repair and maintenance for handy-size and above.
The commercial reason we work with them
Technical capability is necessary but not sufficient. What makes a Chinese yard workable from Turkey or Greece is quotation discipline: if the work list holds, the quoted price and the settled price stay consistent. Shanhaiguan's transparency on this point, together with a strong record on committed delivery time and work quality, is why we opened a contact office for Turkey and Greece rather than treating the yard as one option among many.
What an owner should ask before docking anywhere
- What is the expected ambient humidity and temperature during my docking window?
- Is the coating work in covered or open conditions, and what happens to the schedule if the window closes?
- What exactly is excluded from the quoted work list, and at what rate does an addition get priced?
- Who is the yard's named coating inspector, and who verifies readings on the owner's behalf?
The last question is the one most owners skip, and it is the one that decides whether the specification was actually met.
